Do you like sushi?
Do you like sushi? I have to admit, I have never tried it. The whole idea of it makes me shudder. But, evidently, the growing popuularity of sushi is leading to a decline in numbers of the giant tuna in the Mediterranean. Career tuna fishermen are calling it quits due to the declining numbers and the growing practice of corraling the fish into tuna ranches. Maybe everyone should cut back on their sushi consumption for a while.
Firefighter training center is a go
In spite of environmental groups efforts to hinder the project, a Seattle firefighter-training center will continue on. The groups wanted the State Department of Ecology to require the project to get a permit for the wetlands work that is involved in the project. Ecology said that because the wetlands was manmade to begin with, it didn’t require a permit to do any further work.
New species discovered in Vietnam
Eleven new species have been discovered by scientists in Vietnam. The species were completely unknown before, and include orchids, a snake, some butterflies, and some other plants. The species are located in the Annamites Mountain Range. It’s amazing that we are still discovering new species in spite of the fact that we are killing others left and right.
Tough year for sea turtles
The sea turtle nesting grounds in Southwest Florida is experiencing a slow year. The number of nests has declined since last year, continuing a decade long slide downward. It looks like the decline is set to continue, and it seems that global warming isn’t helping matters any. The number of nests will continue to be counted, and scientists are hoping their predictions will be wrong.
Disaster looming in China
The Three Gorges Dam in China is turning out to be a huge environmental disaster for the country. Landslides, erosion, pollution problems, water shortages - all of these are going to have a huge effect on the surrounding people. One million people were already located to make room for the dam. Can you imagine being told you have to move so the government can build a dam?
